Salerno is a city located on the southwest coast of Italy, in the Gulf of Salerno. It is located about 60 km southeast of Naples and is the second largest city of the region Calabria. Salerno was originally Etruscan settlement and in the early Middle Ages was Lombard principality. At the end of the 9th century in Salerno was established the first medical school in the world, the forerunner of the medical faculties.
Salermo is colorful and charming city, built on hilly ground, with beautiful old town center. The main tourist attractions are Salerno Cathedral with the tomb of St. Matthew the church of St. Annuziata from the 14th century and several other churches, museums and palaces. Special attractions include lovely street Lungomare Trieste. The city has a plenty of restaurants, taverns, cafes, shops and souvenir shops. Salenro is extremely busy port and a very popular sailing destination and charter base.
West of Salerno stretches magnificent Amalfi Coast, one of the most beautiful parts of the Italian coast, protected by UNESCO. It’s known for its beautiful sandy beaches and many small idyllic villages.
