Cruising trough the channel, long about five nautical miles, close to Dubrovnik, Elaphite islands and island Mljet offers an experience different from the majority of what you can experience in other parts of the wider Dubrovnik area.

Best way to reach Ston channel is by boat rented with or without skipper in Dubrovnik. Cruising along the coast, once you have passed the beautiful Elaphiti islands and you come to the most southern tip of the Pelješac peninsula, in front of you opens bay that leads to the town of Ston. The first fishing village on the left is called Kobaš - a place with only few houses and two taverns. If you'd like to arrive to Kobaš by land you need to go through rugged terrain, so restaurant visitors are mainly sailors. How this place is not enrolled in the standard cruising routes, there are never big crowds at anchor in front taverns - although gastronomic experiences from 'Fisherman house', the restaurant owned by Ante Bilic and Niko, with quality far exceeds famous restaurants in Adriatic.

The most famous specialty, in addition to lobster and fish that this rather small aquatorium stands out from all other micro-locations on the Adriatic - is oysters, with unique flavor and quality, the most famous delicacies of the region. Gastronomic offer on the coast of Kobaš bay could be assessed with the highest grade. Next in a row on the way to Ston is a village called Broce which consists a group of stone houses, gathered around a small harbor and looking from the sea it looks just magical. Waterway to the town of Ston is a channel for ships with draft up to max. 3-4 meters and is marked with red and green buoys. In some places the depth drops to only two meters, and due to strong currents in that narrow channel levels of the sea are changing, so navigation trough this channel should be very carefully. All the effort you invest will be returned to you at the end of the channel where waits ancient stone town of Ston, for centuries the second most important place in the territory of the Republic of Dubrovnik.

Ston, a fortified town with a defensive wall across the surrounding area. Advantages of its geographical position on the edge of a large fertile field, with the greatest natural wealth - salt - were the reason for the early settlement of the area. During the Roman Empire town of Ston was named Turris Stagni, and in year 1333 - with purchase of Herzegovinian lords - became part of the Dubrovnik Republic and remained its member until the fall of republic in year 1808.

Dubrovnik Republic because of high importance, transforms town of Ston into fortified town with defensive wall across the entire area, long 5.5 kilometers. It is the longest fortification in Europe, while second in the the world relations, only shorter than Great Wall of China. A visit to these walls can be compared with a tour of Dubrovnik - and towers over the city offers a view over Stone canal and fields of the ancient Ston saltworks. Salt, trademark of Ston town in the times of the Dubrovnik Republic, was highly valuable export commodity with which Dubrovnik merchants - through its stronghold Drijeva, south of Počitelj - supplied her big cattle hinterland, bringing themselves and the state great income.

At its peak in the town of Ston lived about 150 noble families that are got very rich by selling salt, but today is Ston saltworks is technologically backward and privately owned by owner who can't self-finance its modernization. However, traditional salt 'picking' becomes part of Ston tourist offer and carries a new future - quite certain and cheerful, because the salt from Ston is of special quality, extremely rich flavor and with excellent mineral properties.
